Another Great Volunteer Reception!

April 25, 2017

The 2017 Meals on Wheels Annual Volunteer Reception has come and gone. What a great night for all the volunteers, who have put in hours upon hours of time delivering meals in the community, to enjoy a well-deserved appreciation night with great food and company. It was so nice to have a chance to see so many volunteers whose voices we hear every day over the phone!

The dinner was well-attended, with over 130 volunteers. Yolande Cremer former board president, was gracious to host the event again this year.  We had something a little different this year, with Yolande introducing an ice-breaker game called “Left-Right”. I think we all enjoyed that one, RIGHT?

As usual, we honoured a number of volunteers for their milestone hours of achievements such as Helen Groh and Mary Okopna, who both reached 2000 hours of service with Meals on Wheels. Unbelievable accomplishments!

A big thank you must go out to Frank Bowie who helped us out on his birthday! Thank you, Frank! He made an amazing meal with the help of his staff and provided guests with Mediterranean couscous, Greek-style chicken and salad, topping the evening with lemon cake.  Volunteers and staff definitely agreed the meal was a highlight of the evening. Yum!

A thank you of course to our gift sponsors who provided the door prizes for the evening.  The winners of the evening were:

  • Geoff Matthews – gift basket by Sweet Memories from Y’s Owls Maclure
  • Marguerite André – gift card to Vittoria Trattoria
  • Barry Craven – Bridgehead gift cards and coffee
  • Helen Vance – tickets to the Ottawa Little Theatre.
  • Curtis Duquette – gift card to Indigo
  • Pam Young – gift card to Cineplex theatres

I speak on behalf of the volunteers when I say the gifts were greatly appreciated.

All in all, it was a wonderful night. I’m sure we will have even more fun next year when we will be combining our Annual Volunteer Reception with the celebration of our 50th anniversary!! Expect an even bigger, better party. We can’t wait to see you all there.
